Thinking of Light as a Material
In the studio, the first thing we draw is not the walls but light's journey through the day.
To understand a space, one must first understand its light. In the studio, we begin every project by watching how the sun moves through that space across the day.
Morning light is cool and clear; midday light is strong; evening light is warm with long shadows. Knowing at which hour a room will be used determines the placement of a window, the texture of a curtain, and the colour of a wall.
When we think of light as a material, even the simplest space becomes something living that changes continually through the day. Artificial light is then used not to imitate this natural rhythm but to complete it.
