Overview

A reinterpretation of an old stone building, Maden Hotel was designed to make the guest feel they have arrived at a home rather than a hotel. Twelve rooms are arranged around a shaded courtyard, each given its own quiet.

The design brings local craft together with a contemporary sense of comfort. The existing stone walls were kept; the new additions were made with humble, honest materials.

Design Intention

The aim was a quiet kind of luxury that never tires the guest: less, but right. Each room was built around how daylight falls on the bed and how the morning will feel on waking. The shared spaces were kept warm enough for strangers to fall easily into conversation.

Material Palette

Local stone, lime plaster, and oiled walnut; joined by woven kilim and handmade terracotta. Brass fittings darken over time until they belong to the place.

Spatial Experience

Moving from the entrance to the courtyard, a cool shade greets you; the sound of water and the scent of fig leaves settle into the memory of the place. In the evening, low light reveals the texture of the stone wall and the whole hotel slows down.

Details

Headboards were designed with local joiners; each room's key fob is hand-cast. In the bathrooms, micro-concrete sits beside matte brass. The details were made to be touched, not to be shown.
